Let’s talk Spring, shall we?
Well here it is! Trees are in full bloom; flowers are appearing in gardens, rooftops, and window sills …
And across the lands if you listen really carefully you can hear the whirring of vacuum cleaners and the beating of dust from a thousand hallway runners. Yes, for many of us with the season of new life comes the annual chore-fest we’ve come to know as Spring Cleaning and Redecorating. But why do we feel the urge to do it?
It is claimed that the practice finds its roots in Hebrew culture. Some believe spring cleaning originated in Iran, and China too stakes a claim, as a means to marking the New Year. Others provide a more logical scientific explanation as to why we spring clean. The truth may be somewhere between the two.
Simple style changes are all you need to switch it up for Spring. Regardless of how one might feel about tackling some of the odd jobs around the house, spring is usually the time of year we start to notice areas of our homes that need some care and attention.
So here it goes:
DO A THREE SECOND TEST
For each room, I do what I call the “Three second test”.
Go into each room, armed with a pen and notepad, and close your eyes. Open your eyes, and very quickly in three seconds, detect three objects in your room that visually bother you. Use that as a starting point for redecorating.
Like this you can prioritise, make a list from each room as a whole, and a story begins to emerge. You can set a direction that you want to follow or find one that you want to avoid at any cost.
RETHINK WHAT YOU HAVE
It costs nothing to reassess what your room already looks like. We usually overlook the most obvious option – moving your pieces around the house. Sometimes a fresh approach encourages you to get rid of pieces that only clutter up your space. Ask yourself whether you really need everything you see. If not, you can give it a new meaning and new life in another space.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE PAINT MAKE
This is the oldest trick in the book! Nothing simpler than a fresh coat of paint. And do not stop at the walls. Even a tired looking bedside table, doors and shelves can be given a new lease of life.
UPDATE YOUR PILLOWS
Do not want to invest in new sofa? There are dozens of affordable, fabulous cushions that are one of a kind and will add some zing to your space instantaneously. Throw on some blankets and voila – your favorite new resting nook.
I know, I am repeating myself, but plants really do refresh a room like nothing else! I love how this room has its own mini jungle. It just goes to prove that there’s always space to create the lush planted look – consoles, windowsills, shelves, anywhere goes!
