Our Sustainability Criteria

utopiast is a sustainably driven concept store guided by our respect for simplicity, craftsmanship, and ethical production. We bring together emerging designers and sustainable brands committed to producing their products with care and integrity.
We make sure that every product in the utopiast selection meets at least one of our sustainability attributes, which you can read about below. These attributes take into account human, animal, and environmental welfare and align with internationally recognized best practices.

Organic materials

Organic materials have been produced of fibers or raw materials grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers and aren’t derived from genetically modified seeds (GMOs). They require less energy and water to be produced while also protecting farmers, their users, and the environment.
When shopping our clothing selection, keep an eye out for the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which is the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. GOTS-certified products can become only textile products that contain a minimum of 70% organic fibers and meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria.

Recycled materials

Recycled materials are either left-over materials from production or used textiles or materials (like used plastic bottles) that have been reused and given a new life. In most cases, the process of transforming waste into recycled materials uses much less energy than the process of creating new materials, so pieces made this way are not only an awesome choice for you but also for our environment.

Vegan

Products marked as vegan are created without use of any animal (leather and fur), animal byproducts (like wool or silk), or animal testing.

Handmade/handcrafted

If you are looking for a truly unique, personal piece, we suggest you choose among the items marked “handmade/handcrafted”. These are the pieces made with care and special attention to detail that carry the stories of their designers and build a special connection between you and the people who made them. Handmade pieces are usually made in much smaller batches and are thus much more environmentally friendly than their mass-produced counterparts.

Ethically made

You can be calm—people who made the clothing, accessories, or home goods marked with our “ethically made” standard were treated the same way you (hopefully) are at your workplace—receiving living wages, safe working conditions, and voluntary overtime.

Locally made

At utopiast, we’ve collected the best young independent designers and brands from South and Eastern Europe and made sure that all the items are produced locally in their countries. With every purchase, you support craftsmanship in the region and enable our designers and independent brands to grow.

Locally-sourced materials

Sourcing materials locally is a next step from the local production. It means that not only the final product you buy but also all of the materials used in its production were made locally—in the brand’s country of origin or really close by. Because there is no need that your clothes, accessories, or home goods travel more of the world than you have, right?

Made in EU

Pretty self-explanatory: this standard simply means the product was designed and produced in the European Union, respecting its ethical and environmental standards.
