We spoke to KAAITA’s founder Alenka Repič. Alenka is one of those people who immediately exude real passion for what they do and what they stand for. She is a loud advocate of design with purpose. KAAITA focuses on the sustainable production of smartly designed goods. That is why they are interested in details and forgotten techniques. They encourage moderate consumption by avoiding routine and mass production. Their passion is everything that is neatly made. Drawn. Cut. Sewn. Folded. Composed.
I hope you will enjoy reading Alenka’s answers as much as we did when preparing this questionnaire.
Why have you decided to start your own brand and a company?
I have a very strong vision, an inner calling if you want. The best way I found so far is to make it true by running the things on my way in my own company with my own brand with the best team I could find.
What attracted you to the world of design?
I was born with the affinity towards it, but didn’t know that till I meet my partner Matej. He’s an architect and he opened the doors :) Everything else followed.
What inspires you in life?
Smart, intelligent & funny people changing the world.
When working on new products/items what is driving force of your inspiration?
There are many triggers, for example making something I can’t find for my selves, making customised product for a corporate client or just an interesting material I bump into, but always the following explosion in my head driving me towards the end product.
What is your favourite piece from your collection and why?
The Copa Copa slippers. You never forget the first one.
How would you describe style of your products?
Luxury without shallowness or vanity. Just simple things for kings and queens.
What are your plans for the future?
To develop the brand in a way to engage with a much larger audience of “high-achieving citizens of the world”, the ones who are creative or passionate about creativity. The ones that are interested in environmentally and socially-friendly coziness. The ones that want to live a good life without a guilty conscience.
Creating. Whatever. It could be a dinner or a product or a new business model.
Your idea of happiness?
Happiness is a choice. A habit of seeing things in a certain way. Or having a friend that opens your eyes to see it.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would probably have a base somewhere in Slovenia, and than mixing my part time staying between Amsterdam, Copenhagen, London, Reykjavik, Boston…you name it. Why? Inspiring people and places are keeping me alive.
