Effortlessly modern, comfortable, yet distinctive. There are few pieces in our wardrobes that need to meet higher expectations than lingerie. Beside flattering the body, the most intimate layers also need to support us in daily activities, impart confidence while staying comfortable.
Fortunately new generation of designers is approaching these wardrobe foundations with fresh inspirations that transcend traditional sexy or boring, designing the essentials that are feminine as they are comfortable. One of them is 05 studio, an emerging creative collective based in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Founded by Teodora Vukodinova and Sianna Marinova the studio focuses on effortlessly modern, refined underwear and swimwear pieces that feel and fit as good as they look. Designed to move with and flatter the body, their first collection combines elegant contrast between soft feminine style and sporty elements. Grounded in seasonless neutrals like grey and blue and focused on distinctive details, the pieces are multifunctional and can easily transform from underwear pieces to swimwear and beyond.
We talked to 05 Studio founders, Teodora and Sianna, about their personal lingerie style, design process and plans for new collection launching in autumn.
What inspires you in design and in life in general? Travelling is such a moving force and inspiration, exploring new ideas and interesting places, meeting cool creative people, beautiful functional items, art events and spaces, Instagram.
Why lingerie collection? It is a design area that is not overly explored and there are still bigger opportunities for experiments and coming up with new ideas. There are less independent lingerie brands compared to clothing designers and companies.
What are your priorities when designing the collection/pieces? Can we actually make it. Good design that stands out and fit our aesthetics. Comfort. Good fit. Details.
To what extent do your personal preferences influence your design decisions? Probably more than we would want to admit. For example, neither of us likes to wear wired bras so we don’t design any. Also we do not have ideal bodies so we wanted our lingerie to shape them a little, haha.
What is your relationship with trends? How do you find balance between keeping up with trends and establishing your own style? Here’s a secret – we don’t actually follow the trends or watch the latest fashion shows. At least not on purpose. However, with all the visual information that surround us in social media, it is almost impossible to stay unaffected by trends. And we mean not only fashion trends but global trends that happen in the society and the world in general. We try to create essential pieces with a twist, timeless basics that are modern and not boring.

How do you source your materials? We use mostly dead stock fabrics from local stores so we hope that we contribute to minimizing the enormous daily waste. Our mesh fabric is purchased from Italy since in Bulgaria there aren’t good options in this particular material.
Where are your products made? Is production location important to you? Our philosophy is to have our products made locally right here in Bulgaria. We work with an independent atelier and a small family-owned factory and actively participate in the process with hand work for every single piece of the collection. Producing locally gives us the opportunity to work close with the seamstresses and ensure the best quality of the product as well as the work ethics that fit our understanding.
What about your future plans? Do you plan to expand your collection & how do you see 05 Studio evolving in the future? We are planing to expand step by step. First, we will be including some swimwear models pretty soon and launch a new lingerie collection in Autumn. Our initial idea was to have other products in our portfolio like clothing line and product design as well, but we are focusing on the lingerie for now.
