Design style is a constantly evolving thing. Right now, something old and something new with a bit of glamour is how I like to describe my style these days.
I am obsessed to use vintage pieces in my designs. So I have a special joy in bringing old things back to life and I see so much beauty in frayed and tattered covers, aged paint, and rusted edges. Try to avoid the matchy-matchy look. It can look cold and boring, yawn. Decorating a room with different furniture styles, colors, and patterns is super personal and creative — but it can also be hard to pull off.
The trick to getting vintage right is in the balance. Balance can be achieved through colour, scale, pattern, texture and/or line. To make the space your own, combine these elements in unpredictable ways. Find items that are unified through these elements to create appealing displays throughout the room.
Before bringing an item into your space, you have to decide what role will it play in the room. Will the piece become a focal point, or will it simply complement other elements of the room? To create a cohesive design, you need a good combination of vintage and modern, and a few transitional pieces to bridge the gap between styles.
