Can Personal Style Lead Us to a More Sustainable Fashion Future?
It wasn’t until I had spent a great portion of time in Silicon Valley that I realized how much my sense of identity and mood are intrinsically tied to my style choices. In the land of jeans, hoodies, Patagonia fleece vests, outfit kits (VC starter kit, anyone?), and few outliers that simply confirm the rule, I felt out of place, observed, and aware of my black-wearing, tabis-dragging self like never before.
Style clearly isn’t a priority for a place that influences people’s daily habits all over the world. At first glance the idea of casualness over the need for expression seemed comforting, almost freeing. Pull on a pair of jeans and sneakers, and off you go. Anywhere. But for someone who sees dressing as a creative outlet, it soon became pretty limiting, almost suffocating. Like there would suddenly appear an invisible barrier that limited my ability to express myself.
