If the closure of the outside world has thought us anything, it is to delve deep into our (literal) interior worlds and pay more attention to our living spaces. And there is no room more important for your well-being than a cozy bedroom that makes you feel sheltered from the chaos of the world. If you’ve been wondering how to decorate or re-decorate your bedroom into a calm, relaxing space, here are some interior design tips to get your started.
1. Take time to plan
Your bedroom should be your personal sanctuary that is tailored to your needs, so take time to plan and make careful decisions on the floor plan, color scheme, needed furniture and accessories. Scroll through Pinterest, flick through your favourite magazines and then create the mood board of your dream bedroom. You will quickly see the common theme which will make your decisions on the right furniture and accessories much more straightforward.
2. Go subtle with the colors
The best colors to achieve a soothing, minimal look are neutral colors like whites, greys, creams or pastels like lavender, light blue or green. This doesn’t mean that your bedroom needs to be boring— feel free to play with patterns and textures or experiment with different ways to add interesting color pops to more neutrally colored walls and furniture. Bold throw pillows or a duvet cover, maybe an art piece or accessories in your favourite hue are a great place to start.
3. Keep it simple
Regardless of your style, the bedroom should be the coziest place of your home where you can rest and relax without much distraction. A minimalist lifestyle is about living only with the things that bring value to your life. Therefore furnish your bedroom with the pieces you actually need: a bed, a bedside table or two and a dresser or clothing rack are necessities, anything else is optional and can be added later if needed. To achieve minimal look think of the visual weight of each piece. In a small bedroom floor plan, go for a light-looking bed and minimal nightstands. If your bedroom is large, consider a taller headboard, additional pieces of furniture or large piece of wall art to fill out the space without making it too crowded.
4. Go for hidden storage
At utopiast we are big believers in owning less things in general but we are also aware that this is not always possible or doable for everyone. Closed hidden storage is key to a calm, cozy environment in these circumstances. Just be realistic about your storage needs and furnish your space with closed closets accordingly.
The majority of time we spend in the bedroom is in the dark which makes the right choice of lighting even more important. Rather than relying only on your overhead light, try to layer different types of light sources: bedside lamps to read by, a few lamps dotted around to create a lovely glow and an ambient light for the whole room. Try to keep your lighting warm and soft, so pick warm bulbs, dimmable switches and shades that diffuse the light.

There is a difference between minimalist aesthetic and minimalist lifestyle. Whereas a minimalist aesthetic focuses on the visual aspect of minimalism, a minimalist lifestyle is a complete mindset shift of eliminating the unnecessary and being intentional with everything in your life.
6. Create a relaxing nook
If you like to read, meditate or simply love a quiet place to sit and relax, choose a corner of your bedroom and create a comfortable lounging area. All you need is a comfy lounge chair or daybed, few pillows, a blanket and a reading light and voilà … you have created a great place to tuck yourself in for some private time.
7. Make it yours
Once you’ve covered the basics, it’s time to add your interior the unique character. Surround yourself with things you love: find artworks that speak to you and bring you joy, or frame some photos to help you hold onto the happy memories. Add some candles, vases and round out the look with a few plants that will improve air quality and boost your mood.
8. Create a real getaway
There is a difference between minimalist aesthetic and minimalist lifestyle. Whereas a minimalist aesthetic focuses on the visual aspect of minimalism, a minimalist lifestyle is a complete mindset shift of eliminating the unnecessary and being intentional with everything in your life, including the content you absorb. Therefore try to discipline yourself and leave all the devices like your phone, tab, computer or TV outside the bedroom.

Katja sharing her current obsessions: Neutrals I do not know why, but lately I have been obsessing with neutral interiors. Usually I gravitate to dark, almost masculine interiors. It all started with one sublime photo, than I searched for inspiration at Pella Hedeby and Lotta Agaton. And now it is all about neutrals. Neutrals are anything but [...]
